World’s richest woman Liliane Bettencourt dies aged 94

L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, the world’s richest woman whose old age was clouded by dementia, has died at the age of 94, her family said Thursday.

“Liliane Bettencourt died last night at home,” her daughter Francoise Bettencourt Meyers said in a statement. “My mother left peacefully.”

Bettencourt, the cosmetics giant’s principal shareholder, was the 14th richest person in the world, according to Forbes magazine, which estimated her net worth in March at $39.5 billion (33 billion euros).

She was rarely seen in public since leaving the L’Oreal board in 2012, but her name remained in the headlines as members of her entourage were charged with exploiting her failing mental health.

Bettencourt had been declared unfit to run her own affairs in 2011 after a medical report showing she had suffered from “mixed dementia” and “moderately severe” Alzheimer’s disease since 2006.

The complex legal case involved a bitter feud with her only daughter and unscrupulous friends, and even dragged in former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Patrice de Maistre, who managed Bettencourt’s vast fortune, was accused of getting her to hand over envelopes of cash to members of Sarkozy’s right-wing UMP party during his 2007 presidential campaign.

The charges against Sarkozy were dropped in October 2013 due to lack of evidence.

Man arrested in the US state of Louisiana for alleged killing of two black men

REUTERS*

A suspect has been arrested in the US state of Louisiana for the murders of two black men, which authorities said were "racially motivated".

Baton Rouge police have also charged Kenneth Gleason with attempted murder after shots were fired at an African-American family's home.

Investigators say they discovered the 23-year-old's DNA on pistol shell-casings found at the crime scenes.

A lawyer for Mr Gleason, who is white, said his client denies the charges.

During a search of the suspect's home over the weekend, authorities discovered a speech by Adolf Hitler, as well as cannabis and human growth hormone, US media report.

Bruce Cofield, 59, and Donald Smart, 49, were both shot in separate incidents while walking on the streets of the Louisiana state capital last week.

Mr Cofield was homeless, and Mr Smart had been walking to his job as a dishwasher at a cafe popular with Louisiana State University students.

Authorities believe the two victims were first shot from a car before the attacker walked over and continued firing at them as they lay on the ground.

The attacks happened two days apart, and police say they believe neither man had any previous interaction with Mr Gleason.

Police also believe Mr Gleason may have opened fire on the home of a black family in his neighbourhood, where he lives with his parents. Nobody was injured in that attack.

Baton Rouge Interim Police Chief Jonny Dunnam said on Tuesday: "I feel confident this killer probably would have killed again, and could have potentially created a tear in the fabric that holds this community together."

Mr Gleason had just posted bail for unrelated theft charges when he was arrested for the killings.

He has been booked on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property and illegal use of weapon, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.

East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore said his office will seek the death penalty.

Christopher Alexander, a lawyer for Mr Gleason, said his client "vehemently denies guilt, and we look forward to complete vindication".

It is not the first time the Louisiana state capital has been rocked by racially charged shootings.

In July 2016, a black gunman gunned down six police officers in the city, killing three, days after the fatal police shooting of an African-American man, Alton Sterling.

LONDON TUBE BOMB: Donald Trump slams 'SICK and DEMENTED' terrorists

DONALD Trump has lashed out at terrorists after the Parsons Green tube bombing – calling them "sick and demented".

GETTY

The US President took aim at jihadis and seemed to imply the bombing of the London Underground train – which injured 22 – could have been prevented by British authorities.

He called for “proactive and nasty” action to tackle terrorism, before boasting about his record on ISIS compared to his predecessor Barack Obama.

Detectives are hunting an unknown bomber after the improvised device was detonated on a rush hour train at 8.20am.

Witnesses reported seeing a “wall of fire”, but experts believe the bomb failed to fully detonate – and could have been much more deadly.

Trump tweeted: "Another attack in London by a loser terrorist. These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive.

"Loser terrorists must be dealt with in a much tougher manner. The internet is their main recruitment tool which we must cut off and use better."

He added: "We have made more progress in the last nine months against ISIS than the Obama Administration has made in 8 years. Must be proactive and nasty.”

Met Police confirmed the bomb was a “terrorist incident" and a manhunt has now been launched to track down the culprit and any accomplices.

The blast appears to have originated from awhite bucket in a Lidl bag which has wires protruding from it which was found in the rear carriage.

Prime Minister Theresa May is to chair a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergencies committee this afternoon to discuss the incident.

People were hurt in a stampede to exit the station following the blast, which comes after Britain has suffered under a wave of terrorist attacks.

Tunisian women now free to marry non-Muslims

AFP*Tunisian women have been campaigning for greater rights

Tunisia has overturned a law that banned women from marrying non-Muslims.

A spokeswoman for President Beji Caid Essebsi made the announcement and congratulated women on gaining "the freedom to choose one's spouse".

Until now, a non-Muslim man who wished to marry a Tunisian Muslim woman had to convert to Islam and submit a certificate of his conversion as proof.

Tunisia, which is 99% Muslim, is viewed as one of the most progressive Arab countries in terms of women's rights.

The new law comes after President Essebsi pushed for the lifting of the marriage restriction decree that was put in place in 1973.

He said in a speech last month, during celebrations of the National Women's day, that the marriage law was "an obstacle to the freedom of choice of the spouse".

The restriction was also seen as violating Tunisia's constitution which was adopted in 2014 in the wake of the Arab Spring revolution.

Human rights groups in Tunisia had also campaigned for the law's abolition.

The order comes into force immediately and couples are free to register their marriages at government offices.

Many Tunisians see the removal of the marriage restriction as another landmark in guaranteeing women's freedom in the country.

It sets apart Tunisia as the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to remove the legal hurdles to marrying outside the official state religion.

It is an important milestone in a region where religion in marital ties can be at the heart of many a family feud, and long struggles against state laws.

Unlike Muslim women, men can marry non-Muslim women without providing any religious documents.

Tunisia is also home to a Jewish, as well as a small Christian, minority and it is not entirely clear how the marriage restriction applied to them.

Scrapping the decree may not do away with the cultural and traditional obstacles women face with their families in cases of inter-faith marriage, but it now offers Tunisian women greater freedom of choice from a legal perspective.

In July, the Tunisian parliament also introduced a new law that abolished a clause that allowed rapists to escape any punishment if they married their victims.

The country banned polygamy as far back as 1956, setting it part from other Muslim-majority nations.

However, women in Tunisia still face discrimination, particularly in matters of inheritance which still prioritises sons over daughters.

The Tunisian Association of Democratic Women estimates that nearly 70% of Tunisian women are victims of abuse.

Amnesty International reported last year that there were few signs to show that things had improved for women since the Arab Spring revolution in 2010.

Real Madrid post higher revenues but profits drop

Real Madrid’s revenue grew by almost nine percent last season to 674.6 million euros ($897.2 million), the European champions said on Friday.

The results for the 2016/17 financial year, which Real said were without taking into account capital gains from player transfers, were up 8.8 percent on the 620.1 million euros generated the previous season.

Although profits were down from 30.3 million euros to 21.4 million euros, Real said that was due to player bonuses paid for winning the Champions League, La Liga, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

“On a financial plane, the titles have been reflected in increased revenues, but also in higher expenses; particularly relating to bonuses paid to sporting personnel, resulting in reduced liquidity,” said Real on their website.

Real said their cash balance of 178 million euros was the second highest in their history after the previous year’s figures, although they again said that “the drop on last year comes as a result of bonus payments”.

Barack Obama's tweet goes viral after Charlottesville violence

A tweet from Barack Obama drew more than two million “likes” by Monday as the former US president offered a message of tolerance following a deadly weekend clash at a white supremacist rally.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion,” Obama said in the message, quoting the late South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Obama’s tweet garnered 2.3 million “likes,” the third most popular of all time, according to the Twitter-tracking site Favstar. The message was retweeted 980,000 times.

Obama’s tweet struck a chord after the death of a 32-year-old woman hit by a car driven into a crowd by a suspected white supremacist on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

President Donald Trump drew fire for a tepid initial response to the violence, and he followed up Monday with a stronger condemnation of “those who spread violence in the name of bigotry.”

Obama gave additional quotes from Mandela.

“People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love,” a tweet read.

“For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

The most-liked tweet of all time was from singer Ariana Grande earlier this year — saying “from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry” — after a deadly attack at her Manchester concert.

That tweet dethroned the popular photo tweet from the 2014 Oscars ceremony by actress Ellen DeGeneres.

Obama’s tweet also prompted more than 37,000 responses, including both positive and negative comments.

White nationalist rally at University of Virginia

REUTERS*The protesters chanted "white lives matter" and "Jews will not replace us"

Hundreds of US white nationalists have rallied at the University of Virginia, protesting against plans to remove a statue of a confederate general.

The group waved torches and chanted "Jews will not replace us" and "white lives matter" as they marched through the Charlottesville university.

There were clashes with counter-protesters, while the local mayor condemned the march as racist.

A larger "Unite the Right" rally is planned in the city on Saturday.

The protesters are angered at the planned removal of a statue of General Robert E Lee from Charlottesville. Lee commanded forces of the pro-slavery Confederacy in the US Civil War.

Protest organiser Jason Kessler, who has previously accused the town of "anti-white hatred", described the event as an "incredible moment for white people who've had it up to here and aren't going to take it anymore".

Demonstrators held lit torches - which some observers described as a reference to the Ku Klux Klan - and chanted "blood and soil" and "one people, one nation, end immigration", local media reported.

The rally was met by a smaller group of counter protesters who had surrounded the university's status of Thomas Jefferson, holding a banner that read "VA Students Act Against White Supremacy".

Image copyrightREUTERSImage captionThe march surrounded a smaller group of counter protesters

Police had to intervene after a scuffle erupted between the two sides. One of the counter-protesters allegedly used a chemical spray on some of the marchers, the Washington Post reported.

The protest was criticised by many local residents and politicians. Charlottesville mayor Mike Signer called the march "a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism and intolerance".

He wrote on Facebook: "Everyone has a right under the First Amendment to express their opinion peaceably, so here's mine: not only as the Mayor of Charlottesville, but as a UVA [University of Virginia] faculty member and alumnus, I am beyond disgusted by this unsanctioned and despicable display of visual intimidation on a college campus."

Charlottesville is considered a liberal college town - and 86% of the county voted for Hillary Clinton in last year's presidential elections.

However, the town has become a focal point for white nationalists after the city council voted to remove a statue of General Lee.

Some observers also argue that US President Donald Trump's election to the White House re-energised the far right across the US.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organisation, says that "Trump's run for office electrified the radical right, which saw in him a champion of the idea that America is fundamentally a white man's country."

Last month, Ku Klux Klan supportersstaged a march in Virginia - but were outnumbered by counter-protesters.

World's oldest man, Auschwitz survivor Yisrael Kristal dies in Israel

AFP*Yisrael Kristal, the world's oldest man, has died at the age of 113

The world's oldest man - the only member of his immediate family to survive the Holocaust - has died at the age of 113.

Polish-born Yisrael Kristal died on Friday, a month before he was due to turn 114, Israeli media reported.

Mr Kristal, who lived in Haifa, Israel, hit the headlines last year after deciding to celebrate his bar mitzvah a century late.

The original celebration had not taken place because World War One broke out.

Mr Kristal was born in the village of Zarnow, about 90 miles (146km) south-west of Warsaw, in 1903.

The son of a religious scholar, Mr Kristal lost his mother and father during World War One, according to reports. He later moved to Lodz to work in the family confectionery business.

After the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in 1939, Mr Kristal and his family were moved into the Lodz ghetto.

His two children died there and Mr Kristal and his wife Chaja Feige Frucht were sent to Auschwitz in 1944 after the ghetto was liquidated.

AFP*Mr Kristal remarried after the Holocaust and had two children (pictured in 2016)

Mr Kristal's wife was murdered in Auschwitz but he survived, performing slave labour in that and other camps. When he was found by the Allies in May 1945 he weighed just 37 kg (5 stones 11 lbs).

According to Tablet Mag, he thanked the Soviet soldiers who rescued him by making them sweets.

The sole survivor from his family, Mr Kristal emigrated to Israel in 1950 with his second wife and their son, where he continued to run his confectionery business until his retirement.

Mr Kristal was officially recognised as the world's oldest man by the Guinness Book of Records in March 2016.

Speaking at the time, he admitted he did not know the secret to a long life, saying: "There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men than me who are no longer alive."

He is survived by two children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren,Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

His daughter Shula Koperstoch said he had died on Friday afternoon after becoming ill on Thursday.

She told Israeli news website Ynet [in Hebrew] she had had a "great father", adding: "Despite all that he went through, and he lost the whole family in the Holocaust, he had a lot of optimism, and he always saw only light and good in everything."

Cry of a victim led to the discovery of ritualists' den in Lagos

According to a source, the crowd allegedly set ablaze one of the suspects but surprisingly to them, fire was burning all over his clothes but he appeared unhurt.

Residents of Ijaiye, Ahmadiyya and Abule-Egba areas of Lagos State are yet to overcome the shock of a ritualists’ den, popularly called Ajale, discovered right under their noses, in the early hours of yesterday.

They are at pains to fathom how terrible acts of such magnitude were being perpetrated at Obadeyi Ajala street, Ijaiye, in the densely populated area, under the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, though the discovery has provided answers to the puzzle of missing persons around the area.

The den, located beside the main road at the popular Obadeyi bus-stop, Ijaiye, was exposed by a female sweeper who heard the horrific cry of a victim screaming for help. The cry for help came from an underground tunnel, which linked to a canal at Obadeyi street.

Unfortunately, before passersby entered the canal, the woman who cried for help had been killed, but her little baby was found. Under the tunnel, soldiers were said to have found different body parts and many routes linking to the canal.

In the course of their hunt, a man belonging to the group was also arrested who later confessed to being part of a 28-member group operating under the canal.

Items recovered from the shrine included charms, carvings, white clothes stained with blood as well as native soap.

According to an eyewitness account, the suspected ritual killers allegedly target pedestrians crossing or plying the road early in the morning and late at night, as the den is just about 50 metres away from the pedestrian bridge.

They then drag their victims into the manhole, which stretches along the expressway, where they are eventually killed. The Guardian learnt from eyewitnesses that dismembered bodies were evacuated from the scene.

The discovery led to pandemonium yesterday, as irate residents stormed the scene to rescue the victims and apprehend the ritualists. Though people were scared to go inside the hole for fear of what lies inside it, efforts by those who went inside, The Guardian learnt paid-off, as two suspects were brought out but were whisked away by the police.

Angered by the move, two more suspects were brought out but the mob overpowered the police and burnt them alive.

According to a source, the crowd allegedly set ablaze one of the suspects but surprisingly to them, fire was burning all over his clothes but he appeared unhurt.

The source said: “The ritualist said that no one can do him any harm. Even some people tried cutting him with machetes and all sorts of weapons but he still wasn’t hurt.”

This created traffic gridlock at the axis all through the day as the mob stayed in anticipation of getting more suspects. The Guardian could not confirm the number of arrests made as of the time of filing this report.

Another source, Taiwo Ganiyu, a food vendor in the area, said that the police team was able to find their way to the scene around 8a.m. Although Taiwo claimed that two suspects were allegedly arrested but the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olarinde Famous-Cole, who confirmed the incident, said only one person was arrested.

He said: “We are still investigating the matter. It is too early to say if it is an actual case of ritual killing. We shall make our findings known to the public at the end of the investigation.”

Meanwhile, a policeman who claimed to have participated in the operation, said two persons were rescued, adding that those rescued were taken away by the officers who were determined to get to the root of the discovery.

“The police were able to uncover the hiding place where the suspects carried out their evil acts with the aid of OP MESA soldiers who invaded the secluded territory. By 10a.m. the crowd had already tripled. Onlookers from Agege, Sango, Ifo had arrived Obadeyi area in Ojokoro to witness the incident.

“It took several hours to dig into the den where the suspects had hidden their victims; about two persons were rescued and taken to the hospital, as they appeared unconscious. Since security agents were already on the ground, angry mob were prevented from carrying out a mob attack on the suspect, who refused to confess to the crime.”

National Identity Number requires for Nigerian passport issuance and renewal from 1st Jan 2018

Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mohammed Babadede

From January next year, Nigerians without the National Identity Number (NIN) are to be denied international passport (IPP).The Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mohammed Babadede, dropped the hint yesterday after a meeting of the National Identity Management Harmonization Committee in Abuja.

Specifically, the Federal Government, in 2014, ordered all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) and security organisations involved in biometric data capture, to complete their registration and handover to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Yesterday’s meeting was part of efforts to actualise the harmonisation process.Consequently, Babadede explained that every citizen, seeking the document, must possess the identification number as a pre-condition

His words: “We have agreed that from January 1, 2018, anybody who is going to apply for the Nigerian passport, whether renewal or fresh, must first have a national identity number. We are doing this to ease business for Nigerians.

“There is no need for you to go and have your biometric captured by NIMC and then you come and capture again with the Nigeria Immigration. Once you give us your NIN number, we will collect the biometric from the NIMC and produce your passport. That is the intention in all other agencies.”

According to him, resident foreigners are not exempted, as they will also require the identification when renewing their residence permits. He continued: “I have also given a directive that any foreigner resident in Nigeria will not get his/her permit renewed until he has an NIN. To achieve this, NIMC NIN and passport numbers will be harmonised and we are committed to allowing NIMC in Immigration. All of its staff can work in our passport offices.”

Kogi Assembly In Free-For-All Fight As Speaker, Journalists Escape Death

Hell was let loose today at the Kogi State House of Assembly when suspected hoodlums in large numbers invaded the assembly complex, disrupted sitting and afterward descended on the member representing Igalamela/Odolu constituency, Friday Sani aka Makama, who was just resuming sitting after being reinstated by a state High Court.

The Speaker of the House, Ahmed Umar, and other lawmakers, along with journalists who were at plenary, narrowly escaped death when the thugs disrupted the house sitting and unleashed mayhem.

The hoodlums after gaining entrance to the assembly premises tried to force their way through the Speakers entrance but were prevented by the Speaker’s orderlies who blocked the entrance and held firmly to the door.

The hoodlums promptly climbed the gallery and chased out everybody chanting “What kind of rubbish sitting is this? All of you should vacate this chamber or we kill you.”

The hoodlums then proceeded to haul down chairs at members causing the Speaker’s security aides to whisk him out of the chamber, alongside other lawmakers who scampered to safety through any available doors.

Outside the chamber, journalists and other lawmakers had to scale the fence when some of the hoodlums stationed at the gate did not allow passage.

Tension heightened, when the member representing Igalamela Odolu constituency, Friday Sani was singled out, blocked and beaten mercilessly. The hoodlums also fvideo-recorded him while being attacked.

The plead by the Deputy Speaker, who was crying and pleading for him (Sani) to be let go was ignored by the hoodlums who continued the beating  even in the presence of policemen who watched akimbo.

This was contrary to an earlier assurance from the Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inaluegu that the Assembly complex will be safe.

Reacting to the development, the Speaker, Ahmed Umar described it as unfortunate. He said it was more pathetic that it happened in the presence of police and other security apparatus who watched the scene as if they were on the payroll of the hoodlums or their sponsors..

Ahmed said the Commissioner of Police’ assurance of safety was fake. He however eulogised his security details for saving his life, “We didn’t see it coming. The commissioner of Police came in during our executive meeting that there were information of an invasion, but assured that it was under control. Most often, lawmakers fight themselves on the floor. But this dimension of an outside invasion is new.”

Ahmed said he, and other lawmakers will review the situation with the assembly security and come up with a position sooner.

However, the state Governor, Alh. Yahaya Bello has decried the invasion, describing it as an act of rascality.

The governor who reacted through the Director General, Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo said the state government frowned at the act and promised that perpetrators will be brought to book.

“We will fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice. We will not allow anybody to stop the lawmakers legally elected by their people from carrying out their duties. This act is condemnable and will will not condone it.”

The whereabouts of the embattled member, Friday Sani, is yet to be known.

Cristiano Ronaldo appears in court on tax charges

AFP*Ronaldo could potentially be jailed for three-and-a-half years if found guilty, experts say

Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived at a Spanish court amid allegations he evaded millions in tax.

Prosecutors accuse Ronaldo, reported to be the world's highest paid athlete, of evading €14.7m ($17.3m; £13.1m) in tax since 2010.

The Real Madrid star has previously denied the allegation, saying his "conscience is clear".

Ronaldo, 32, is the latest in a string of footballers to be pursued by the Spanish tax authorities.

Argentina's Lionel Messi, who plays for Barcelona, was handed a 21-month prison sentence after being found guilty of the same charge last year.

Earlier this month, the court ruled he could pay €252,000 in place of jail time.

However, Messi was only accused of evading €4.1m in tax, €10.6m less than Ronaldo.

Ronalda arrived to give evidence at a court in the Madrid suburb of Pozuelo de Alarcon just before 11:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Monday.

According to prosecutors, Ronaldo allegedly took "advantage of a company structure created in 2010 to hide income generated in Spain from his image rights from tax authorities" which was a "voluntary and conscious breach of his fiscal obligations in Spain".

Ronaldo's management have also denied the allegations.

But if the case is sent to trial and he is found guilty, the Portuguese forward could face a fine of "at least €28m" and a prison sentence of three-and-a-half years, the Gestha union of experts at Spain's Inland Revenue says.

A gunman opened fire at a nightclub in southern Germany early Sunday, killing one and wounding four before being shot by police, officials said in a statement.

The 34-year-old attacker "was critically injured in a shootout with police officers as he left the disco, and later succumbed to his wounds in hospital," police said in a statement.

"The motives of the man, who probably acted alone, are not known yet," they said.

Officers began receiving emergency calls from terrified clubbers at around 4:30 am (0230 GMT) after the man began shooting in the nightclub in an industrial zone in the city of Constance, killing one person on the spot and leaving three other people seriously wounded.

Shortly after he left the building, he was shot by police. One officer was also injured in the exchange of fire. Terrified nightclubbers had either fled the building or found a place to hide, police said, adding that the danger was now over.

Helicopters were circling overhead and special forces were also deployed to secure the site. Local broadcaster SWR reported witnesses saying that the gunman was armed with an automatic pistol.

A bouncer at the site had sought to stop the attacker, but was himself injured by the man, SWR said. The shooting came just two days after Germany was shaken by a knife attack in the northern port city of Hamburg.

A 26-year-old Palestinian had killed one and injured six in an assault at a supermarket. He was a known Islamist with psychological problems, and investigators say his motives remain unclear.

Germany has been on high alert about the threat of a jihadist attack, especially since last December's truck rampage through a Berlin Christmas market that claimed 12 lives.

But it has also been hit by other assaults unrelated to the jihadist threat.

Among the deadliest in recent years is a Munich shopping mall rampage by 18-year-old German-Iranian man which left 10 people dead including the gunman himself.

Man killed wife on a US cruise ship for 'laughing' at him

A man suspected of killing his wife while on a cruise ship in the US state of Alaska did so because "she would not stop laughing" at him, a witness says.

Kenneth Manzanares has been charged with the murder of his 39-year-old wife, whose body was found with severe head wounds in their cabin.

He was detained after security agents found blood on his hands and clothes, court documents said.

Mr Manzanares' court-appointed public defender has not commented.

The victim has been identified by US media as Kristy Manzanares, from Utah.

A witness who entered the couple's cabin before the security agents said he saw the 39-year-old suspect dragging the victim's body to the balcony, the documents said.

The witness then grabbed the woman's ankles and pulled her back in.

When he asked Mr Manzanares what had happened, the man allegedly said: "She would not stop laughing at me."

Later, during a search by FBI agents, the suspect said, according to the documents: "My life is over."

The incident happened on Tuesday night on the Emerald Princess cruise ship, operated by Princess Cruises. It had departed with some 3,400 passengers from Seattle on Sunday for a week-long trip.

Kristy Manzanares was described by her employer, Summit Sotheby's International Realty, as being a "dedicated and loving mother who juggled her business schedule to make her children a top priority."

The FBI is investigating the case because it occurred in US waters. A spokesman said other family members were onboard the ship on the same trip, but details about them have not been released.

Mr Manzanares made his first appearance in a federal court in Anchorage via video link from Juneau, where he was being held. A hearing has been scheduled for 10 August.

3 Israelis civilians stabbed to death in West Bank attack

Three Israeli civilians have been stabbed to death in a settlement near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Another Israeli was wounded in the attack in Halamish. The Israeli army says the attacker was shot and caught.

The attack came near the end of a day of clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces over new security measures at a Jerusalem holy site.

Three Palestinians were killed and hundreds were hurt in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said he is freezing all contacts with Israel after it installed metal detectors at the site, known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Israel says the extra security is needed after two Israeli policemen were killednear the site a week ago.

On Friday, four Israeli civilians were stabbed in Halamish (also known as Neve Tsuf) after "an assailant infiltrated a private home", the Israeli army said.

Israeli media reported the victims were a man in his sixties and his son and daughter, both in their forties. Another woman in her sixties is being treated in hospital for injuries sustained in the incident.

The Israeli army said the attacker was a young Palestinian man called Omar al-Abed, who hours before the attack, posted on Facebook linking his actions to events at Jerusalem's holy site.

He was shot by a neighbour - who was a soldier with the Israeli Defense Forces - and taken to hospital, but his condition was unclear.

His house was raided on Saturday, and his brother "apprehended", the military said.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman also said they were taking steps to prepare the Palestinian attacker's house for demolition - a measure regularly taken by Israel, which says it is a deterrent, but condemned by rights groups as collective punishment.

There has been a wave of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings of Israelis predominantly by Palestinians or Israeli Arabs since late 2015.

At least 47 Israelis and five foreign nationals have been killed in nearly two years of such attacks.

At least 255 Palestinians - most of them attackers, Israel says - have also been killed in that period, news agencies report. Others have been killed in clashes with Israeli troops.

Israel says Palestinian incitement has fuelled the attacks. The Palestinian leadership has blamed frustration rooted in decades of Israeli occupation.
